Dr. Brian Merrell is a dedicated educator with a career spanning 20 years, in three different districts.  Dr. Merrell is married to Crista Merrell, a school counselor at Johnson Elementary School in Bryan ISD. Without her and their relationship this honor would not have materialized, and it is on behalf of the family they have built together that Dr. Merrell accepts this award. The Merrells met in college while attending Texas A&M University, and their relationship was established in Bryan, TX.  In fact, their roots began less than a mile from the African American Museum where Crista accepted his proposal for marriage at Heritage Park in Bryan, TX.  Soon after graduation their careers in education took them away from Bryan, but God blessed them by bringing them back home four years ago. Over the course of their twenty two years of marriage, the Merrells have had the honor of raising seven children – four adopted and three biological – and have welcomed three grandchildren into the world.  Both Brian and Crista believe their family is an outward expression of God’s love and reconciliation and seek to live this out daily both personally and professionally. Dr. Merrell earned his Bachelor of Arts in Biology, Master of Arts in Education Leadership, and PhD in Education Administration from Texas A&M University. His career in education began as a classroom teacher at Cypress-Falls High School where he taught biology and anatomy and physiology. He went on to serve as assistant principal and later principal of middle school campuses in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD before serving as principal of Waller High School for nearly ten years. Dr. Merrell currently serves as Executive Director of School Leadership in Bryan ISD.
