Essie Childers is a graduate of The University of Texas at Tyler, Abilene Christian University, and Walden University where she recently completed a Graduate Certificate in Adult Learning. For 32 years Essie has taught with the goal of mentoring and encouraging students to visualize success to reach their academic and personal goals. During the past 13 years, she has developed a strong track record of teaching first-year students through a Learning Frameworks course at Blinn College in Bryan, Texas.
In 2013, Essie published her first book, Packing Tools for Success Beyond Middle School, and became the Founding Director of Young Ladies Success Summit. Ms. Childers remembers having wonderful female mentors in her life and felt she had a duty to give back to young girls in her community in a similar way. With the support of family and friends, the first Ladies Success Summit in the Brazos Valley Area was held on the campus of Blinn College on February 9, 2013. The Summit provided young ladies an opportunity to meet and hear successful women's stories in their community and attend motivational sessions on personal responsibility, self-esteem, bullying, and college success tips. Since the beginning of Young Ladies Success, over 500 students, parents, speakers, and volunteers have participated in the conference. YLS is now a non-profit organization and will celebrate the Ninth Annual Young Ladies Success Summit in 2021.
Essie has contributed greatly to the education profession and her community. She is past President of the Texas Community College Teachers Association, comprised of over 6,000 teachers and administrators in Texas, and now serves on the Foundation Board. In August 2020, Essie was selected as a You're the Tops Honoree for making a difference in the Bryan, College Station community. October 2020, CASP (College Academic and Support Programs) awarded Essie with a Lifetime Achievement Award for outstanding contributions in developmental education.
Previously, she has received multiple awards such as: being named as a 2018 Distinguished Alumni from Longview Independent School District, the May 2018 Cengage Faculty Partner of the Month, a 2017 Carol Dochen Developmental Educator of the year recipient, a 2014 recipient of CRLA's Distinguished Teaching Award, a 2014 Outstanding Service Award from Blinn Professional Association, and the 2013 On Course Ambassador of the Year Award.
Ms. Childers has served as a volunteer consultant for the American Association for Adjunct Educators. Currently, she serves on the QEP Development Team at Blinn College and is a Senior Fellow of the first Blinn College Future Works Academy.
Ms. Childers is a dynamic, engaging speaker and has presented at numerous conferences across the United States.
She married her ACU college sweetheart, Terry Childers. They have been blessed with three children, Shalawn Harris (husband, Rickie), Jonathan and Adam Childers, and two grandchildren: Terry and Toni Harris.
