Please join the Brazos Valley African American Museum on Saturday, June 8, 2019, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm for the “Hog Branch” Art Exhibition Opening Reception featuring Artist Lloyd Mays. This event will feature original works, refreshments, and a poetry reading from the artist at 2:00 pm. This event is free and open to the public. Pieces will be available for purchase to add to your own collection. The exhibition will be on display until August 31, 2019.

Lloyd Mays grew up on the east side of Brenham, Texas, in an area known as “Hog Branch.” He received his first paint-by-number art kit on his sixth birthday. As a child, he loved words and found it as a way to express himself in a house full of 13 kids. “I wanted people to know what it was like growing up during segregation,” said Mays. “I had a lot of feelings that were pent up when I was growing up, and through my poetry and painting I was able to release a lot of those feelings.”

The collection features paintings, poetry, and stories of growing up in Hog Branch, a portion of Early Brenham, Texas. Lloyd Mays will be available to discuss his art. His book “I Came from Hog Branch,” which is a collection of his poems and paintings will also be on sale.
