MLK Essay & Poster Contest

This contest is open to all students in grades K-12 in private, home, and parochial schools of the Brazos Valley. The intent is to provide all students with an opportunity to learn about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., his message and his work, give students opportunity to reflect on our present and the future in light of Dr. King’s message; and encourage continued study through awards and recognition.

Themes :

K-5th Grade: “How Can I Create Peace & Unity In My Community”

6th-12th Grade:

Interpret the following quotation by Dr. King,

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of

comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” from “What is a Man” speech, August 1959. OR

Why is it significant to preserve African American history?

6-8: 300-500 word essay

9-12: 500-750 word essay

Essays: Must be typed, double spaced on white 8.5×11 paper,

numbered paper. No posters for 6-12. Email entries to mlkcontest@bvaadst.com.

Each entry Must include a Title Page containing the following information:

0        The Title for grade category entered

0        Student name, grade, teacher and school, or program name and coordinator

0        Parent/Guardian name, contact phone number, and email for notification

Prizes :

Two winners will be determined in each category. Cash or gift cards will be awarded.

K-1: First $25, Second $20

2-3: First $30, Second $25

4-5: First $50, Second $30

6-8: First $75, Second $50

9-12: First $100, Second $75

Announcement of Winners will be made on Monday, January 16, 2017 at the MLK March and Program.

Winning essays and posters may be displayed at the Brazos Valley African American Museum.

All entries must be received (mailed, delivered, emailed) by Tuesday, December 20, 2016, at 4pm to:
